Finally the National Museum Accessibility Ensured

For the long lasting two years effort of B-SCAN, universal accessibility is ensured in the Museum. The construction of separate toilets for the wheelchair users and a ramp for persons with disabilities started in the National Museum on October 2012, which ended in January 2013. Honorable Information Minister Mr. Abul  Kalam Azad inaugurated the Ramp on 1 March 2013.

In collaboration with Rotary Club of Dhaka Central, B-SCAN visit to the National Museum’s Director General Mr. Prakash Chandra Das with a letter for the permission to make an accessible toilet and ramp. He took the matter with utmost sincerity and seeks help from B-SCAN for designing ramps and toilets for persons with disabilities. Then after the second meeting on August 2, 2010 through Rotary Club, B-SCAN with the support of the architectural head of BUET Dr. Jebun Nasrin and Associate Professor Mr. Nazmul Imam and two other Associate Professors, Rotary Club of Dhaka Central and Director General of museum, the decision was taken that BUET Architectural Department will make this design for the museum and the museum engineers will cooperate with them too. In the meeting Mr. Prakash also said that since it is impossible without the permission of Ministry of Information, and then if permission is given from the Information Minister, then there will be no restriction on this.

It was decided that, on the occasion of the 7th anniversary of the Museum, on August 7, 2010, Honorable Information Minister Mr. Abul Kalam Azad will be present as a special guest and immediately, a small meeting will be arranged with him.

Professor Shubhagoto Chowdhury, Chief Advisor of B-SCAN, Mr. M Azizur Rahman, President of the Board of Trustees of the National Museum, Mr. Lieutenant General Haroon Or Rashid, the Chairman of  Rotary Club of Dhaka Central and members of the club, Dr Jebun Nasrin and Prof. Najmul Imam,General Secretary Salma Mahbub & other members of  B-SCAN attended this important meeting that was held in the museum. According to the decision of the meeting, the professors of BUET worked tirelessly in just one week, not only for the wheelchair users but also made a full-fledged international standard design for all types of people with disabilities, which is expected to implement the museum authorities gradually.

For various reasons, the design of the BUET was not accepted by the museum authorities and later started the process of making new designs with the Department of Archaeology of Dhaka University, which was approved in 2011. But every year the budget deficiency & procrastination of different government side it put the matter into a delayed process. There is no progress of the work.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of B-SCAN wrote an open letter to Prime Minister’s  daughter Ms. Saima Wazed Putul in “The Daily Kaler Kantho” newspaper on 31 January 2012. Later, the copy of the letter from the newspaper and also with the copy of the letter along with the ministers and secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs was again sent to the director general of the museum on April 17, 2012 to know the current situation and progress of the project. Then the work of the toilet was started on August 1, 2012, and the ramp work was completed  later.B-SCAN has been contacted by the museum for several times for the technical suggestions in between. B-SCAN members tried to cooperate as much as possible. On behalf of the museum, those who sincerely cooperate on this issue were the Director General of the museum, Mr. Prakash Chandra Das, Deputy keeper Ms. Niru Shamsunnahar , Assistant Engineer Mr. Monirul Islam, Deputy Assistant Engineer Mr. Nazir Hossain and Designer Mr. Abu Bakar Siddique .
